Then you missed my point, Moose.

By every measure one can think of, the civil war in Iraq is hotting up.

(The Sunnis, used to having the run of the country, and oppressing the majority Shiite population, appear willing to fight for generations if need be... and they are fully financed in this effort by cash flow from neighboring Sunni nations.)

The quickest way to resolve this (instead of having it drag on for decades... totally preventing Iraq from ever knowing peace, or developing as a nation, and acting as a breeding ground and training ground for terrorists of ALL STRIPES... many of whom will soon be threatening all parts of the world) is to let the LOCALS settle matters --- on the battle field is they so desire.

Several outcomes are possible, but I believe the most likely is the eventual partition of the country into zones when the various groups can feel confident in their sovereignity... likely a Shiite South Iraq (partnered up with Shiite Iran), a mini-Kurdistan nation in the North, and a Sunni zone that chooses to affiliate itself with Saudi Arabia or Jordan (like the old 'Trans Jordan').

(PS --- the West should welcome this near-inevitable course in regional events, because it will take us out of the crosshairs, and Islamicists will be busy targeting 'appostate' Islamicists for a while. This is exactly how the West's Reformation emerged.)
