It's hard to live through the really bad cultural moments- especially when they directly impact your job. Well, a story that helps me; perhaps it might help you. Because I'm on the library board with the local school superintendent, he asked me to participate in a year long planning cycle for the local school system. We had not shared, at least directly, any pedagogical views so I was not aware of his. Much to my surprise he gave a talk at the first meeting of the planning group trashing the testing movement and offering views very close to my own. So there is one small New Jersey school system trying to do the right thing. Swimming against the tide and all that.
