"Murtha is about it on the honesty side."

Given that Murtha is considered to have the best connections into the working military, there is probably a reason for his present stance. We probably could have salvaged the situation a year ago. But that would have taken a commitment of many more soldiers than we have now, and a commitment to rebuild Iraq. Unless things have changed radically in the past few months, there are still areas in Bagdad that don't have running water. Electricity is still spotty and unreliable.

But we didn't do that. We tried to do it with a minimum of personnel. With a brewing civil war and whole areas where we dare not operate, the situation is probably unsalvageable. The people we have in country are burning out. They did a hell of a job with the tools at hand, but they weren't allowed a chance to win.

And the situation really sucks. Iran has been handed regional power status by this debacle. They have won, big time. There almost certainly will be a regional conflict, involving Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran and likely Turkey and Israel. Whatever the result of that will be is impossible to predict, but odds don't favor it being pretty. Saudi Arabia is not likely to survive. Not that is necessarily a bad thing, but it is just something else contributing to the instability. The ME has been a house of cards ever since the Brits pulled out. It will be more stable once the dust clears, but the West isn't likely to be very happy in the interim. And the results are probably going to be less than enjoyable also.
