I and my two sisters all graduated from 4 year private colleges in the 1990s. We lived on campus and we worked part time during school year and full time during summer vacation. Our financial aid packages were quite similar. Basically, the tution ($16k) was covered by parental contributions ($2k) and school grants ($14k). The housing ($4k) was covered by student loans. The foods/books/fee/personals were covered by earnings from jobs. We're not outstanding students, just the slightly better than average types.

Had we attended a public university, the financial aid packages would remain the same except that the school grant would have been less because the tuition was much lower.

And if we didn't get any school grant, we probably still could have gone to a four year university with a co-op program like my wife. She graduated in a 5 year program and her earnings from jobs were enough to pay the tuition without school grants.

By the way, both me and my younger sister paid off the loans in 1-2 year. I was luckier because my first job required lots of traveling so most of my expenses were covered. For my sister, she postponed buying a car for about 2 years and she took the public transportation to work. She also had to shop at discount stores and did most of cookings herself.

>I know quite a few people who didn't go to college because they couldn't afford it. Did YOU pay the 10k? You're also very unusual in repaying your 15k student loan in one year. The whole price tag sounds like a junior college tab - when and where did you go to school?
