I think there's always been an element of thuggishness and bullying in America - it's how Joe McCarthy became powerful. Bush taps into the same vein of Americans. Many Americans have lamented that, having the world's most powerful military and being the world's sole superpower, why don't we just IMPOSE our way on those that resist it? Bush is the answer for those people, the people that worship authority and raw power.

I think after 9/11, Bush had those people, and was able to con and co-opt enough of those who ordinarily wouldn't be in that group through fearmongering and appeals to "patriotism" to form a majority. Hopefully, the converted are falling away. But, he'll always have that core group that would have made damn fine Nazis. I think they're his true base of support, and you can find many on SI.
