That general was George McClellan Re USA civil war. So what was special about Grant? It was kind of obvious that if you have numerical superiority you attack the enemy on several fronts. Surely it wasn't just him that thought of it. He did have some experience of combat though during the Mexican war. The other thing thats difficult to understand is why Grant is regarded such a useless president of the USA. The USA probably grew economically and politically by the biggest amount ever at those times. Re the auto industry.. The USA auto industry can grow probably again if they come up with some radical new product like a rail road or something. Something energy efficient. How freaking wide are those freeways in the USA anyway? most of them seem to be falling apart. How many 18 wheelers can be replaced with just one train running efficiently? The 18 wheelers can do the last 10 miles or so using electric engines, probably on tram lines. -g-
