I find it interesting that you have framed this as a question of individual taxpayers getting good value for their money. That would never, ever have occurred to me.

If our politics weren't so permeated with "assassination by anecdote" then perhaps we could have balanced discussions about the merits of various government programs.

But the hate-talk radio crowd wouldn't get much attention being fair and reasonable. More fun to wind up a "Let me tell you about this incredible stupid moron!" topic and then open up the lines to let people vent.
