That reminds me of the bed warmers the pioneers used to have, where they put a pan full of hot coals under the covers. I wonder how many cabins they burned down. We had a Crosley and would fill a roasting pan with hot coals from the coal furnace and place it under the oil pan at night (car was in a detached garage so the house wouldn't burn down if things went awry - fortunately they never did).
