House arrest, often referred to as "home detention" is typically used as part of the sentence for certain crimes - think Martha Stewart. She served time in an FCI, then finished out her time with home detention.

You'll see it employed most normally with white collar, financial type crimes.

I wouldn't think its an option for violent criminals.

Dangerous criminals should be behind bars, i agree. I'm talking about jail space used up by people who messed up but aren't hardened criminals. House arrest for them would be a good learning experience.

Second offenders, no way.
