I don't like Lieberman at all. I want someone in the race who can either say they didn't vote for the Iraq war, or someone who can at least acknowledge, now, that it was a stupid idea. Poor Joe is still thinking it was the Right Thing to Do- and he'd probably do it just the same if he had the chance at a do over. I would rather vote 3rd party, then cast a vote for Joe.

You have an interesting idea.

McCain/Lieberman as the '08 Republican ticket. But, what about Guiliani? Do you rule him out? Or figure that he won't make it through the primary? How about Rice? Any chance at all that she might throw her hat in the ring? I would guess not.

Yes, it has to be someone who is strong on the terror and the war issues.

I think the Republicans are short on electable talent but far better off than the Democrats.

I agree with you on the Democrats. They are in deep kimshee and don't seem to realize it. Dean is on the way to destroying what is left of the party. FDR and JFK would not be too happy right now.

BTW, it is interesting to me that McCain has, more than once, been identified with someone from the Democratic side. Not long ago, he was a VP choice for kerry.

NY Daily News predicts Rummy will resign early next year and Joe Lieberman will be tapped to head DOD.

I've read that, too. It will only happen if Joe has decided to leave the Dem party. Just taking the Rumsfeld job isn't the "party leaving" act; it's leaving his Senate seat open for the Rep governor of Conn to appoint his replacement and tilt the Senate even further to the Reps.

No way back in to the Dem party after that.

I don't see Lieberman joining the Rep party. So he would have to do the Independent bit.

So, it simply looks very unlikely. Joe's committing political suicide to do it. Odds are very, very slight.

Sounds like bizarre GOP-wishful thinking to me.

What base has Lieberman got outside the Democrats? I can't see more than minimal numbers being persuaded to support him who would not in any case have supported McCain, from either party; he's so close to Zionism I can't see him carrying much of the liberal or centrist Democrat vote, including any remaining Jewish caucus there, and he's not RW enough to collect many GOP votes beyond those of any candidate who'd accept him as running mate anyway.

For me, he's a central anti-magnet - polarises people away from him. There's absolutely nothing in his politics to attract anyone left of centre, and he's only useful therefore as a more RW counter to a (relatively) LW Democrat presidential candidate. He's not going to carry many votes even then... just ask Al...
