Ted, The history of the Cubaño in America is one of conservatism. Their vote for Bush in 2000 is nothing new.

I thought more Hispanics still vote Democrat over Republican?

That's true of most Hispanics but not Cubans. The original group that emigrated here were the upper and upper middle classes who were more conservative. The Latinos that come from Central America and Mexico tend to be much poorer and if and when they get the vote, tend to vote for the Democrats. The Cubaños I knew in LA didn't even look much like the Mexicans at all......more Spanish looking.

The irony of it all is that when Janet Reno upheld the law and "deported" Elian Gonzales to his father, she pretty much cost Al Gore his chances of winning Florida. Could be one huge reason why both parties are afraid of how the Hispanic community would react to any solution to the illegal immigration problem.

I think you are right about the impact of Elian Gonzales but I don't think it mattered much. The Bush roots in the Cuban community run very deep through Jeb. He worked in Miami for a long time and has lots of close ties to that community. Like I said, I think his wife is Cuban.
