Fillmore > It occurs to me that the creation of the state of Israel and the events leading up to to this was one of the biggest disasters of the 20th century -- not least to the Jews themselves.

It would certainly seem so and there's no doubt that the creation of the State of Israel has not brought the happiness or contentment to the Zionists (many Jews are not Zionists) that they hoped for. Indeed, most can still only envisage peace in Israel in terms of eliminating or ethnic cleansing the Palestinians and, if possible, destroying Islam itself.

> A key reason for Hitler's fanatical anti-Semitism and mass killing of the Jews was the Nazi perception (probably accurate) that powerful Jews played a key role in bringing the United States into World War 1

That's not altogether true. There's no doubt that the German Jews played a double game in WW1 and world Jewry was also instrumental in the development of strong anti-German feeling on the part of the allies prior to WW2. But Hitler was not against the creation of the State of Israel in Palestine. In fact, he was all for Zionism. Remember his concern was to "purify" the herrenvolk of any aliens and therefore he was happy to get rid of the Jews in any way he could. The Zionists were keen to oblige.

>>"A bold demand that the German Zionist Federation be given recognition by the Government as the only instrument for the exclusive control of German Jewish life was made by the Executive of that body in a proclamation today. All German Jewish organizations, it was declared, should be dominated by the Zionist spirit."<<

In other words, the spirit of not being German.

>>The establishment of the historic Jewish state on a national and totalitarian basis, bound by a treaty with the German Reich, would be in the interest of a maintained and strengthened future German position of power in the Near East.<<

But not all Jews wanted to leave Germany and certainly not to settle in Palestine. To a considerable extent these were the ones who ended up in the concentration camps. Furthermore, and as I understand it, mass extermination of the camp inmates, and not exclusively of Jews, started only in 1942 when it was clear Germany could not win the war.

> So it can be argued in a very real sense that the fanatical ZIonist effort to create a Jewish state in Palestine by hook or crook was a key factor behind the Nazi persecution and massacre of the Jews during World War 2.

In fact, the opposite -- the Zionists had common cause with the Nazis. Both, uniquely as it happens, saw the Jews as a separate and identifiable race. It was the non-Zionist Jews, ie those who wished to assimilate with the Germans, who were the problem -- both to the Zionists and to the Nazis.

>>A post-war interview in which Adolf Eichmann declares, "I often said to Jews with whom I had dealings that, had I been a Jew, I would have been a fanatical Zionist. I could not imagine being anything else. In fact, I would have been the most ardent Zionist imaginable."<<

Of course, the Zionists will ardently deny that they participated in any way with the Nazi regime and most documents which show that they did have been removed from the internet and probably world literature. Further, any evidence or argument about the Holocaust which differs from the Zionist version has been deemed anti-Semitic and criminalized. So one has to make up one's own mind and leave it at that.
