I will admit I am not an expert on what motivates US voters. But I do recall a heavy emphasis on various points which all seem very peripheral to the actual government or policies of the US - for example, abortion, burning flags, gay marriage, individual ownership of automatic weapons, death penalty for murderers, positioning of plaques bearing biblical inscriptions...

So depicting the stance of a candidate on one of those in extremely virulent colours might be presumed to have sufficient electoral appeal one way or another.

Here I am perhaps biased in thinking that anyone who lets one of these decide their decision is too f*cking stupid to be allowed to vote, or indeed breed. But I think this is a centrist bias ;-)
