MS stopped innovating for IE once Netscape went down. Firefox continues to evolve and is safer to boot. IE is very unsafe due to ActiveX. i avoid using it whenever possible (some sites require it), and shut it down as soon as i am done.
read about the dangers of IE vs. FF here: slate.com

probably most people are drawn to Firefox only by tabbed browsing, but there are plenty of other features as well. take a look at Greasemonkey: slate.com

obviously MS doesn't think the browser is very important anymore, or they would have already released a better browser. it doesn't affect revenues, so they ignore it. but it must be disturbing to them in a broader sense: if this many people can be swayed to a free alternative (FF), then maybe it's not too long before free alternatives to Windows and Office gain a real market. this would be a revenue problem for MS. with systems breaching $300 from the main makers like Dell, and free Office substitutes increasingly available, i think the days of MS' two main monopolies are numbered.

that is a real problem for MS, because in technology you really need a monopoly to make consistent high-margin real money. the only problem is, it's very tough to create a monopoly. you have to be very good or very lucky.
