There still is a variant of it in production and is often deeply embedded in some devices.

I can vouch for that.
I was using the Commodore PET at the time (same Basic from Microsoft).
In the late 1970s it was used as a development platform for several radar and submarine sonar devices that are still built and used today. The new variation allows unimplemented instructions to be dealt with. Previously they just stopped the clocking and a hard reset was necessary to get out of the condition.
