According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), National Vital Statistics Reports Vol 52, No. 3, September 18, 2003 pg 30-34 nation wide in 2001 there 11,348 instances of firearm related fatalities from assualts. Among children under 1 year, there were 11. Among children between 1 and 4 there were 55. Among children aged 5-14 there were 180.

The next category is "15-24" which includes some children, but also a LOT of adults and consisted of 4,200 firearm assualt related fatalities.

I'm sorry but 18 to 24 year old gang bangers, drug dealers and criminals are NOT children playing with guns who accidentally shoot themselves when their parents aren't around.

Many gun owners, particularly handgun owners, believe that guns are useful for self-defense.

Police are gun owners and gun carriers. And the reason why ALL police carry guns for self-defense is because they don't work for that purpose???? Is that what you are saying?

However, a gun in the home is far more likely to be involved in a homicide, suicide or unintentional shooting in the home than to be used against an intruder.

Define "used". Used should not only include shooting an intruder but simply using the pointing of weapon without firing the weapon at an intruder. Those stats only include shootings which is a phony statistic. See John Lott's study on the use of firearms over 2,000,000 a year in self defense, often simply by displaying a firearm. Displaying a firearm to an intruder doesn't exactly make the news or end up in statistics.
