"On BBC World just now, they were showing a Russian gas pipeline under construction, heading for northern Europe. It's about a metre in diameter. It will carry a LOT of gas under the Baltic Sea."

AFAIK, this pipeline will replace the ones carrying gas to western Europe that travel through Poland and Ukraine.

Germany gets around 40% of its natgas from Russia and with the new pipeline, the supply from Russia won't be in doubt if relations between Russia and its neighbors become testy.
