Feds spend too much is accurate but not all of the funds needed to reduce the deficit can come from spending. It is just unrealistic to expect pols to fight pork. At the same time one has to try to keep the tax system "progressive" (small p) so not to end up with te Lose/Lose, class warfare plan that Mary borrows from the left that stifle growth with the naive belief that somehow the rich are at fault and that if you confiscate the money they earn, we can spend our way to success.
