I am not as sanguine about the availability of competent people as you are. From what I have seen of organizations, almost all of them are seriously screwed up- whether the organization is a large private company, or a large government entity. Since whatever we do, we can expect major screw ups, I'd rather we do things to people who are more able to weather screw ups, than do things that will affect people living on the edge. Unintended consequences abound, of course, but at least if you aim in the right direction you may not hit the most vulnerable quite as often.

Class warfare and taxing the rich is a failed policy. It lessens growth and thus everything else growth brings. A gas tax hurts the driving working class. You choose these alternatives--is it because you drive infrequently and not for your livelihood and your income tax burden will be lowered. Well my income tax burden will be raised under your plan so you will have your hand in my pocket and i am not soros, buffet or gates. I dont mind paying taxes but i do mind paying taxes that make this economy less robust. Thats why i proposed a tax surcharge to fund the war without tinkering with the rates again as the democrats typically do. Hell, it was bill bradley who gave us great rates back in 1986. He was a democrat but he understood the ramifications of high marginal rates and growth.
