HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil and gas volumes shut-in as a result of recent storms continued their slow recovery Friday, according to the Minerals Management Service.
The agency expects recovery to occur in small increments over the next several months, an MMS release said. Therefore, shut-in statistics will be published twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, instead of the current daily schedule, starting next week, the MMS said.
Some 447,425 barrels of oil a day, or 29.8% of daily oil production, remained off-line, down from 31% on Thursday.
Shut-in gas production decreased to 2.35 billion cubic feet a day, or 23.5%, down from 24.4% on Thursday, an improvement of approximately 900 million cubic feet a day.
Cumulative lost oil production since Aug. 26 - when Hurricane Katrina triggered the first wave of evacuations in the Gulf - reached 100.4 million barrels of oil on Friday, or 18.3% of yearly Gulf crude output.
Total lost natural gas production amounted to about 519.2 billion cubic feet, or 14.2% of the region's annual gas output.
About 126 platforms remained evacuated, five fewer than Thursday.
Full recovery of oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico won't occur until the summer of 2006, Energy Secretary Sam Bodman told reporters on Thursday. "The infrastructure of our country took a real blow with hurricanes Rita and Katrina," he said.
