We're consuming 5X the energy we're "entitled" to, according to your implications." Sure we do. But you figures only work for those who maximize their energy use based only on near term advantage. I've been using CF lamps for over 15 years, even in the days when they gave weird colors and started slowly. I also invested, and still do, on automatic shutoffs so even to CF bulbs don't burn for all that long if no one intervenes. I've favored smaller, more fuel efficient cars since the mid 1970's. I've used electric vs. gas mowers despite their near term cost advantages because I believe they reduce overall energy costs. I also have ridden the edge of what is allowed because of grass height because mowing to a golf course height is borderline insane. Unless, of course, you are a golf course. However, I don't like it when my house averages over 80 degrees F. Nor do I care for it when my night time temp. is less than 60 degrees F. And I don't ride the bike much when the temp. exceeds 80 degrees F. So call me inefficient, despite spending a premium on a high efficiency heating and cooling system. Still, I suspect strongly that my energy consumption is probably less than 50% of most of my neighbors. Who tend to be on the lower end of the economic scale of home owners. In addition, I know for a fact that my energy consumption is less than 30% of my neighbors in the old neighborhood. I talked to several and know what they spent on electricity and gas. Given the recent price hikes in the cost of natural gas, I am probably less than that. So yeah, your figure of 80% reduction is a straw man. There is a huge variance between usage patterns. Some take more short term advantage than others.
