Ted, Why do you think our energy consumption per capita is significantly higher than Japan's and Europe's when our standard of living is not?

I've never been to Europe, but I've been to Japan. The standard of living is pretty high there, but not as high as America. People here pretty much like having their space. If we had to squeeze 100 million people into a land mass 2/3s the size of California, you might hear a few complaints. And you might have mass transit systems that make lots of sense.

Do you really think we care about energy consumption when current new homes are 20% bigger than homes built 20 years ago?

Yeah right. I've seen new homes built these days. They are anything BUT 20% bigger than new homes I've seen 20 years ago.

When did self loathing become bad when there is justification?

There is a fine line between introspection and self-loathing. Of course, the political rhetoric all too easily blurs that line.
