Kerry fought fair against dirty fighters. Sometimes that means you lose.

He is a classy honest guy who thought he could ignore the obvious liars on the rightwing. But when the networks and Rove echo machine gave the liars so much attention, Kerry was caught in a no-win situation. Spend time denying the ridiculous stories Rove-Smearvets were putting out and let himself be knocked off message. Off important issues. Or ignore them and let surrogates do the mud-fighting.

Several others things, no war-time president has ever been defeated (and this may be a big reason Bush started the war to begin with). Plus, there was all kinds of cheating in Ohio which might have been enough to steal it. Then there were the phony terrorist alerts, the suspicious message from Bin Lauden three days before the election, and the dishonest waves of TV ads by Bushies which totally distorted Kerry's record and strength on defense issues.

Put it all together and the country is now stuck with Bush-Cheney again, at least until a new congress can impeach them.
