I don't recall ever voting for our being world policeman, or the issue even being raised. All I recall is fearmongering, first over the communists, now over the terrorists.

Its in the fine print.....its what politicians say to journalists by way of explanation and then the journalists filter it through to us. Its what we are taught in school esp. in the South. We've all been getting since we were small kids. America, the beautiful....the land of the free. There is a certain element of truth in it that's why its so believable.....esp. by people who are good and decent. Its the way one wants to see his/her country.

However, when you start to uncover the real America....the one that sells military weapons to dictators, the one that ignores poverty in its own back yard; the one who supports right wing dictators etc, you begin to see that everything is not quite that beautiful. 1984 was not necessarily written about the Soviet Union.

During the past 5 years, there are three things that have really stunned me. How Rove stole the 2000 presidential election with nary a whimper from Americans. Howe easily Bush sold his agenda to the American people. And how irresponsible and negligent our press was during both those events.....suggesting they are not as free as we once thought.

The British press has no problem criticizing the gov't.....why is the American press so afraid or so unwilling?

It seems to me that Americans need to look more closely at what we have...............I don't think its the charmer we have been led to believe.
