The question is not what's more important - gold or oil (of course oil). The question is what's more "important" - gold or the small pieces of paper with the portraits of US presidents.

Gold does poorly in disinflation.
We were in disinflation for the last 18-20 years or whatever.
Now we are headed into deflation where gold typically does well.

Because oil is influenced by peak oil constraints I think it is silly to compare oil to about anything else and gold as a deflator for housing is indeed absurd. In fact, because of the cyclical nature of gold, it is probably absurd to use it as a deflator of about anything.
