Interesting about the origin of Happy Holidays.

I don't know if that's factual or not. The source didn't offer any documentation. But it seems plausible and it's certainly interesting in the context of the current fuss.

Re that Ruth Marcus piece that you posted yesterday...

<<Really? I've just gone on the Target Web site and plugged Christmas into my product search. "We found 39,197 match(es) for 'Christmas' at Target," it reported. How offensive is that?>>

...as it turns out, the search of Target for "Christmas" is set to return "Holiday" as well. So there really aren't 39,197 matches for "Christmas." There are a lot, though.

Following up on that I noted that some of the matches come from a link on each product page to "Holiday shipping" which tells you how late you can order for the package to be delivered by December 25. So it would seem that the link should be called "Christmas shipping." Except that Hanukkah starts on December 25 this year, so it really is "holiday" shipping.
