The structural port of New Orleans (which includes surrounding areas) was not much affected by Katrina, and by all reports is recovering quite admirably. portno.com The city remain viable, and indeed, vital, as a port and as an entrepot. Culturally -- well, it's going to be much smaller, much whiter, and probably have a lot less crime, illiteracy and poverty, as poor blacks have been relocated to Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, etc., and probably can't come back because there's no place for them to come back to (and may never be). They'll still call it New Orleans but it won't be anything like it used to be, at least not culturally.
