wow, COP in talks to buy BR...this is a big-sized acquisition for the oil industry. maybe now we will see some more buyouts happen. i hope it is an all-stock deal as i have a BR position in a taxable acct with a large paper gain i'd rather not realize. if COP is smart they'll do it for cash. if BR is smart, they'll do it for stock. if they're both smart, they'll split the difference as VLO did in buying PCO.
let's see what happens tomorrow to the other North American independents. stocks like DVN, APC, ECA (i own them all).

strange to relate, there was a mega-tout of BR in the latest Barron's.

Conoco Is in Advanced Talks
To Acquire Burlington Resources

ConocoPhillips is in advanced talks to purchase oil and gas producer Burlington Resources Inc. for more than $30 billion, people familiar with the matter say. This would be the largest oil-field deal since the oil megamergers of the late 1990s and early 2000s, and would push the third-largest U.S. oil company by market capitalization closer to the number two spot currently held by Chevron Corp.

The talks are still fluid, these people warn, and could fall apart. But should the discussions stay on track, a deal could be announced this week.

Both Conoco and Burlington declined to comment Sunday evening.
