Index Venture Partners, backer of blowout-success Skype, added an open-source company to its stable Thursday with a $5-million investment in business-intelligence software maker Pentaho.

This isn’t the first open-source startup in the European venture firm’s portfolio. It is a backer of MySQL, a Red Herring 100 Europe company. The database startup has gained significant traction internationally, with some $20 million in sales in 2004.

Index investor Bernard Dalle said Pentaho would be synergistic with some of the other startups in his firm’s fund. “Many MySQL customers were searching for an open-source BI [business intelligence] offering,” he said.

CEO Richard Daley comes from Lawson Software, where he was a vice president. Pentaho cofounder Andre Boisvert bootstrapped the company through its initial product development and said the company has already found customers.

New Enterprise Associates’ Vladimir Jacimovic also joined in the first-round investment. His venture firm has backed open-source companies such as SugarCRM, XenSource, and Sourcefire (see Six Software Startups to Watch).

Check Point Software Technologies bought Sourcefire, which makes open source intrusion prevention security software, for $225 million in October (see Check Point Buys Sourcefire).

Pentaho’s business intelligence software is designed to help companies dig through their databases for actionable information. The company’s technology provides support for sales and profitability analysis, customer and human resource reporting, and financial and operational data mining.
