Those numbers seem about right. Docomo sold 3.11 million and 4.41 million WCDMA handsets during the 2nd and 3rd quarters respectively (per their earnings reports). It seems likely that after this quarter, the big WCDMA sales increases in Japan are going to have to come from Vodafone. They must be the source of a substantial portion of the PDC sales.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that we have seen much evidence that VOD Japan is on the right track.

The absolute number isnt that big, but the YoY percentage increase is the biggest all year.

Japan October Mobile Phone Shipments Up 32% On Year

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japan's shipments of mobile phones, including personal handy-phone system devices, soared 32.0% in October from a year earlier to 3.17 million units, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said Tuesday.

Shipments of third-generation phones in October jumped 99.9% on year to 2.38 million units, according to the association.

Customer demand remains strong for 3G phone handsets with music, electronic payment and other features.

As many users are switching to 3G phones, shipments of second-generation handsets dropped 41.5% on year to 670,000 units, JEITA said.
