Just because someone is an abrasive and obnoxious drunk doesn't automatically make him wrong. The interesting thing about McCarthy and his era was not the senator, but his enemies. Previously the American left was looked upon as the residual of the Stalinist sympathizers who got a pass during the war because "Stalin was on our side". Thus the Roosevelt administration didn't much care if these anti-Americans nested in the Dept of State.

The Axis collapse didn't bring peace, however. It simply transformed the conflict into the Cold War with the NEXT genocidal and oppressive nightmare to haunt the earth in the 20th century. McCarthy and others tried to clean up State, as well as certain other infected institutions. The result was not his success (he failed) but the emergent transparency of that anti-American movement that eventually seized the Democrat party, and managed to wield power from time to time (and also, incidentally, the emergence of the contemporary conservative movement motivated by the gaping need to STOP the flow of socialism and Stalinism in the post-WWII world.)

Tail Gunner Joe was incapable of realizing that the only way to root out the Leninists was with a New American Renaissance. 60 years later that renaissance continues to gradually emerge. Fortunately for America, it is slow, but unstoppable...
