Tookie Williams - On the Killing Floor The only purpose of government sponsored capital punishment is eye for an eye revenge. A lot like the towel head lunatics in the Mideast that the Chimp is so busy trying to civilize by military force. Of course, here like there, it's religious fundamentalism that deludes people into thinking that capital punishment accomplishes anything else but revenge, and unsurprisingly it's the Religious Right anti-abortion "Right to Life" blowhards who are the biggest pushers of the death penalty here in the US. This is Religious Right Wing America - where it's now politically correct to debate whether we should allow government sponsored torture. We are sinking lower and lower.

I still haven't given up on the death penalty altogether but imo its use should be 1/100th of what it is now, and using entirely different standards. I think most convicted persons can manage some degree of redemption given half a chance, there is lots of evidence to support that within the Texas legal system alone. On the other hand I have been in Florida's death row personally, and imo there are some that cannot be redeemed. The question is who am I to make that determination? If I negate an all-forgiving God based on bloodlust while still championing the Christian cause am I not betraying Jesus with a kiss? The present system is a no-go, to me. Maybe a system could be worked out where the death penalty made more sense.
