The fact is that Dems are historically more sympathetic to cries for nationalized relief than Republicans. That's just the way it is. What you valued in the abstract can be painful in practice.

Startling new input makes one reevaluate one's principles. Either you revise your principles or you stick with them an apply them to your situation, painful though that may be. Either choice is valid IMO. What isn't valid is continuing to assert the the principle but hypocritically making an exception for your personal tragedy. You're still in the process of sorting that out. I'm sure that in the end you will make one of the honorable choices.
