When you evaluate people, you are seldom playing a game of hard logic. It is much more a matter of basic trust. If I know someone extolls the virtue of lying, I don't bother to spend much timing looking for pearls in their sty, although strictly speaking logic does not preclude there being some. In the same sense, Congressmen who accept a million or two in bribes might actually be diligent in all of their Congressional duties, it does not mean they actually let the bribes influence their legislative activities. Fortunately, most people feel otherwise.
