There is a sizable contingent of people who are more concerned with offending someone else than with being offended. As long as they / we remember this is our personal cross to bear we are fine. When I start telling you how to act and what to believe I have crossed the line. Robert Bork calls this Authoritarian Liberalism. The death penalty works. People are dissuaded from murder by it. Tookie was a brutal murderer and he founded an organization that taught / required others to behave the same way. If even one other person is reminded not to commit one murder then the punishment was appropriate.
