Those two paragraphs perfectly highlight the problem with Monetarism, or Debtorism, or what ever someone may wish to call our current economic system. Its a system which historically has created its own demise at regular intervals -- roughly equal to that of a human lifespan. Greenspan created a long expansion which must be ofset by an even more traumatic downturn. Schumpeter said, "If you don't want the bust, don't have the boom." Like Geenspan, Bernanke believes these events are not connected. .
