Definitely. And I agree with the emphasis on writing because it relates directly to learning how to think and read. I particularly liked the emphasis on writing in math classes. Hadn't thought of that.

There are many such stories in NYC. All of the ones I know about come from dedicated teachers being given resources to do their thing.

The problem is still how to institutionalize it. There's a program at Brown University with some money that's been used in NYC to try to do such. But it's had, to the best of my knowledge, uneven results.

Two problems. Educational bureaucrats struggle against working outside the lines, which these kinds of programs require. And it's the bureaucrats who control the purse strings. And pedagogical philosophies which emphasize discipline for poor students over learning.

Do you know the Harry Chapin song that is something like "flowers are red . . . ."?
