Tookie Execution: Some of us have been over this ground before; but on a day like today, I feel it is important to say something.

Given the options, or rather limits, we are forced once again to look at the whether or not our justice system is just.

Human justice is never perfect justice but we strive to resolve criminal injustice in a manner that permits individuals and society to reconcile with unjust events.

In the case of the Tookie Execution the case is certainly resolved. A firm and determinant decision has been reached, and acted upon in a final way. It is over.
It may not satisfy people's vengeful needs, or correct the wrong that has been done, make anybody pay, make everybody happy, but it is resolved.

The only other option to consider is long incarceration. This resolves nothing; it just holds the person, who may be able to identify with it in a satisfying or even rewarding way (Like Bundy did). There is always the possibility of status change or for the perp to be let loose back into society. Neither the victims nor society can ever find a way to reconcile with such a person in a fair and equitable way.

Incarceration for life is pointless. It is inhuman, it does not resolve the crime, it does not rehabilitate, and it is a futile waste until the perp ultimately dies. So in essence it is a death penalty with the added inhumanity of pointless incarceration for life. It is the best example of a failed justice system that I can think of. We can't even claim it is a punishment to fit a particular crime.

I saw a sign on one of those churches in Oklahoma that said, "For all you do, His blood's for you."

Now what kind of banana headed bullshit is that?

Hard to reconcile this with the news that a whole bunch of Mega-Churchs are closing their doors this Christmas.

So what's that about, anyway? It was new to me when a friend mentioned it the other day. I'm not confident about her framing of it. What do you think?
