I was surprised by his calling the Ownership Society "Social Darwinism."

I've never understood what the Bush folk meant by the "Ownership Society" and I gather they finally decided they didn't either. I haven't heard it used in a very long time.

My best guess is that it was one of those "sit around the room and try to save social security" moments, when someone threw the thought on the table. They trotted it out in one of Bush's speeches, it didn't go anywhere, and they dropped it.

As for the "Social Darwinism" bit, I can't see that catching on as a campaign slogan. It does go clash, bang, whatever in the debate over intelligent design (otherwise known as creationism) and evolution.
