Many people are delighted to learn that they are building a Big Dig or a Bridge to Nowhere* in their district. IMHO in government less is more.

* Wasn't that a Beatles song?

Oral, There is no doubt that we have elected people that ended up disappointing us, and going against our wishes, but that problem has come about because of the choices we have in elections. There are no longer any statesmen. They are all politicians, and they all care about being elected again, over all else, and one way to help them get reelected, is to build those projects that Peter mentioned. It is a vicious circle.

One of the worst things is, that there are times that opposite believers will support each other to get their support on something else. I had a Texas representative once tell me, that the government of the capital, was a "you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours". That is no way to run a railroad.
