Japan Partially Lifts 2-Year Ban on U.S. Beef, Defusing Trade Dispute Japan partially lifted a two-year ban on American beef on Monday, defusing a tense trade dispute. Tokyo eased the ban after months of negotiations between American and Japanese trade and farm officials, and amid threats of retaliation by members of Congress. "This is great news for the marketplace, but it is not going to change anything overnight," said Sean McHugh, a spokesman for Swift & Company, a large meat processor.
