The MBA's Weekly Mortgage Application Index declined 5.7% for the week ending December 9. On an unadjusted basis, the index was down 11.0% compared with the same week one year earlier. The Purchase Index decreased by 3.5% while the refinancing activity fell 9.7%. The four week moving average for refi's is down 4.6%. The average rate for 30-year fixe mortgages decreased to 6.28% from 6.32% while the average rate for 15-year fixed mortgage decreased to 5.83% from 5.84%. The percentage of people choosing ARMs jumped from 31% to a near record 35%.
