Taxes are in essence a symptom that we spend too much.

Need roads?
Put up a toll booth.

Get rid of the Great Society entitlements.

The something for nothing society is broken.

Don't forget local municipalities also getting stuck with the bills too. A big part of the housing boom has been almost bankrupt local governments desperately pushing through all developer projects, encouraging eminent domain, and high density overpriced product all in the game of pumping up the tax base.
