Do you think it would be feasible from an engineering standpoint to rebuild houses in the floodzone on a system of anchored floats that would allow the them to rise and fall with the water level?

I also think the 'high/dry ground' from KATRINA flooding RE prices are going to soar

Wish that were true since I have a high and dry undamaged home and would like to be able to benefit from this.

It isn't happening because no one is buying real estate, period. And there are lots of folks moving out. There is an excess supply of good housing with no significant demand for it.

Rental real estate on the other hand is doing great. It reflects the fact that things are very unsettled around here. Until we have some clarity on what is going to happen, it will stay that way.

I wonder how many of those old houses were contaminated with lead paint? I heard the mayor of Austin saying that some of the displaced New Orleanians living in Austin shelters were used to paying maybe $200 a month for very sub-standard housing, and simply don't have the ability to pay much more than that.

I have no idea where you can rent a place to live for $200 a month. We used to pay a similar price for a little apartment Uptown but that was 20 years ago. Probably had lead paint, too.
