The effect on the fishermen and other affected people was very inconsistent. Some made a huge amount of money renting out their boats to Exxon. Others had their entire way of life destroyed.

What was really needed was a way to get reasonable compensation to affected people in a hurry. Instead they got this huge legal fight over excessive punitive damages. The initial award was over 10x damages, and they spent years in court just getting it reduced to about 10x. Seems to me everyone would have been better off to settle for 3x damages or so back in the 90s.
