Do the other significant figures not matter of is it guesswork "Somewhere between 500,000 and 6 million and let's use the high number"?

The Germans did keep very good records. So 6 Mil does seem to hold up. The Euros were so traumatized after WWII that "Holocaust Denial" laws got passed.

Although Germans are and were very particular, for the most part, in documenting what they did, I doubt that there is anywhere a list of all those people or even very good evidence of the number.

The actual number of Holocaust dead was about 11 million, of whom 6 million were Jews. The Germans were meticulous record keepers throughout. They issued 11 million one-way train tickets for the deportees being shipped out by cattle car! The Germans tried to destroy evidence at the end of the war, but there was too much, they couldn't do it. Check out Lucy Dawidowicz' The War Against the Jews 1933 - 1945 for full details.

Yad VaShem has the names of about 3 million of the victims.

In short, there is PLENTY of evidence of the number of victims.
