Don't forget the firebombing of the cities toward the end of the war. Most Japanese buildings were made of wood, and the US firebombed most major cities. In Fog Of War it says that 30%-50% of civilians in most major Japanese cities died due to this firebombing.

Getting nuked and sustaining millions and millions of casualties during the war may have had something to do with it.
