Apparently, this is not the total number of posts posted but the total number of posts read. If you read the same post 3 times the number increases 3 times. I wonder whose brainchild THAT was!

Total posts is the total number of posts that have been posted to SI. When you reread a new post it updates to the current total number of posts. If no one makes a new post on the whole site than the number will stay the same when you reread a post. The number is also a link to the most recent post on SI.
