To maintain their brand, they have decided to call W-CDMA "3GSM". GSM meant, originally, Groupe Speciale Mobile and was a TDMA air interface for mobile phones. They changed the name to Global System for Mobile communications as part of the holy wars to get market share around the world. Here's the background to GSM: ccnga.uwaterloo.ca In fact, GSM is losing market share everywhere and by 2010 will probably not even exist in Africa, even if the GSM people try to give away their old equipment. GSM is losing market share to CDMA because CDMA is the best way to get mobile cyberspace, which is what "3G" is about. GPRS is a takeoff of CDMA technology and QUALCOMM is suing Nokia in regard to GSM and GPRS technology for breaching their patents. CDMA is what's happening. There is also OFDM, but there isn't much mobile cyberspace in OFDM outside wifi, which is still hot-spot only. It's all going CDMA, even if they call it 3GSM. That's just a GSM figleaf, but underneath the figleaf is the usual QUALCOMM technology to phragment photons and move them through the aether from base station to cyberphone, and back again. I will collect royalties on 3GSM and am doing so and it's very nice. I hope 3GSM sells a LOT. The equipment is more expensive than CDMA2000 and I also collect royalties on the GSM mode too, which is ironic and fun. Siemens is playing with words and acronyms. Mqurice PS: Being forward-looking, you would think that the QCOM stock price would be dropping if GSM is eating the CDMA lunch. Oh, crikey, look at the share price. finance.yahoo.com Check out the dividend growth. I am hoping for more of what Siemens says is happening. I wish 3GSM would hurry up and take over ALL the GSM markets and CDMA markets too, if they are able to. It's all grist for Mq's mill.
