You are exactly right. It doesn't help if we downplay the threat of this technology to privacy and freedom. Mish's blog on the chip is a good start but the implications are even more far reaching.

In Munich, Germany there is talk about using RFID to charge for general road usage (Maut). It doesn't take a lot to expand the concept to know where everybody is located at any given time. Cell phone records can already provide reasonably accurate information on this.

Anonymity is a large part of physical freedom and privacy. Constant observation and record keeping is destroying our willingness to freely express ourselves. No free society can remain free and dynamic in such an environment as expressing unconventional ideas might have repercussions many years down the road. Our political system is already badly suffering from excessive record keeping as people are blamed for statements and actions they made years ago despite the fact that they may have matured and therefore changed their mind and moved on.

Most communications are already stored in the developed countries. Once we track and record movements of articles as well as people and then associate them we will have entered the days of total control. Not because we will not be able to move freely but somebody or anybody will know where we were, whatever we wrote, read, lost, misplaced or got rid of. Just about only thoughts will remain free for a few more decades.

We are naively and ignorantly allowing irrational fear destroy the very things we most cherish.
